Terms of Use

The short version.

Drawtone is a musical instrument for iPhone. Everything you draw with it, and every WAV or MIDI file you export, is yours — we claim nothing in it and never see it. The app itself, its interface, its sound design and its example pieces belong to us; please don't lift them into another product. It is offered as it is, and you are responsible for what you make and where you publish it.

01 What this is

These terms apply to the iPhone app Drawtone and to this website. By installing or using the app you accept them. If you do not, the remedy is simple: don't use the app.

02 What you make is yours

Every drawing you make in Drawtone, and every recording or MIDI file you export from it, belongs to you. We claim no ownership, no licence and no right of use over it — and since none of it ever leaves your device, we could not exercise one if we wanted to. Play it, publish it, release it, sell it. No credit to Drawtone is required, though it is always welcome. How your work is handled technically is described in the Privacy Policy.

This includes anything you build on top of an example drawing. The fifty pieces in “Get inspired” are starting points, not stock content with strings attached: what you do with one after you open it is yours in exactly the same way.

03 What you publish is your responsibility

You are responsible for using the app lawfully and for anything you release into the world with it — including holding the rights to any material you recreate in it. The app is a tool; the judgement is yours.

04 What the app can and cannot promise

Drawtone synthesises sound in real time on your device: the same drawing, the same settings and the same tempo produce the same loop, and the WAV you export is the loop you heard. We treat a note that fails to sound, a loop that goes quiet halfway, or an export that does not match playback as a release-blocking defect and test for exactly those.

Even so, the app depends on hardware and on iOS. The system can interrupt or reroute audio for a call, an alarm or another app; a headset or a car stereo adds its own latency; a device that is low on storage can fail to write an export. The app is built to handle these gracefully, but it cannot make them impossible.

05 What belongs to whom

The app's design, interface, icon family, copy, the instrument palette and synthesis engine behind it, and the fifty example pieces are the work of Drawtone and are protected by copyright. Your licence to use the app is personal, non-exclusive and non-transferable: use it as much as you like, on any device your App Store account allows. What that licence does not cover:

  • copying the app's design, interface or sound engine into another product;
  • reselling or redistributing the app itself;
  • reverse-engineering it or extracting its synthesis core, except to the extent the law expressly allows;
  • using the Drawtone name or branding to promote something that isn't Drawtone.

06 The app is offered as it is

We build and test this app with care, but it is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and uninterrupted or error-free operation. We do not promise identical behaviour on every iPhone model or every version of iOS.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss — including work lost from the canvas or an export that failed to write. Export anything that matters to you rather than leaving it only on the page. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot be limited under the law that applies to you, and if you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.

07 If something is wrong

If a line does not sound, a loop drops out, an export does not match what you heard, or the app loses your drawing, we want to know immediately — on an instrument, that is a serious defect, not a cosmetic one. Write to loopiosoftware@gmail.com with the device, the iOS version and what you heard.

08 Purchases and the App Store

The app is distributed through Apple's App Store, and Apple's own terms cover your download, any payment and any refund. There is no in-app purchase in this version; if one is added later, it will be handled entirely by Apple, and refunds with it.

09 Privacy

Drawtone is built so that what you make stays on your device and out of advertising or profiling. The details are in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

10 Changes

New instruments, scales and features may be added over time, and these terms may be updated with them. When they change, the date at the top of this page changes too. Continuing to use the app after an update means accepting the current version.
